The MC07 project is our seventh renovation in Bertrand Goldberg’s Marina City complex in Chicago.
Previously renovated by a former owner, the unit had been structured into a series of spaces with multiple materials and finishes that had diminished the integrity of the original space. Our project builds upon the reconfigured kitchen, minimizing the colors and materials used and highlighting key aspects of the original design by Goldberg such as its structure and expanding space.
In this project, we reference the design template created for MC02 and MC03 that was created to return units to their original spatial and material condition while updating all its systems to current comfort standards.
The new continuous black floor unifies all the areas in the residence, blending spaces and activities. It also reintroduces the monolithic black tile floor that all the units in Marina City featured when the building opened.
The U-shaped countertop in the kitchen acts as a food preparation area and a moment of arrival with the low cabinets. The configuration helps maintain the original presence of the kitchen while opening it to the dining and living spaces of the unit. The original metal cabinets are painted with one of the original colors available in Marina City, introducing a pop of color in the space.
The bathroom area will be completely rebuilt using glass mosaic tiles custom-blended similar to the original blue color schemes. Original light fixtures are secured and refinished to be installed in the entry area. Balcony floors and railings are restored and repainted to standards required by the building’s landmark designation.
Ultimately, MC07 is a project that continues our work to bring back the original spatial qualities of the residential units while highlighting their unique characteristics and updating it for contemporary life.
