This house in the Forest Crest development in Glencoe, Illinois, is one of the five model homes that architects Keck and Keck designed for real estate developer Harold Friedman. Ultimately, twenty-two houses would be built in the nine-and-one-half-acre subdivision development located next to the Turnbull Woods Forest Preserve.
Ira Weinstein was the original owner of the 1952 three-bedroom home, who afterwards contracted Keck and Keck to add an extra module, providing a three-season lounge area and a greenhouse.
Our clients, one of whom grew up in a Keck and Keck home in the same development, purchased the house and after a few years living in it, decided to expand its footprint to accommodate gatherings with their large families as well as their growing art collection.
The one-story home expands its footprint toward the south, adding a new entry area, dining area, and office. The existing garage and den area are reconfigured to include a second car garage, laundry room, and storage area.
The expansion uses the original materials and architectural elements, such as the cedar siding and brick exterior walls, exposed wood beam ceilings, insulated windows with louvers, and skylights.
Overall, the renovation and expansion of this home aims to maintain the spatial and environmental qualities that Keck and Keck envisioned for the house while updating it to meet the needs of modern living and the current occupants.
