About

Originally built in 1875, this modest, two-story, single-family home in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, underwent a complete renovation to modernize and adapt it for the owners’ lifestyle. The couple asked for a space to entertain and a place for themselves. Nothing too fussy, but thoughtful and considered.

Previously, one was greeted by the stair with little room to maneuver upon entering. Prior renovations that had slightly separated a coat closet and powder room from the living and dining area resulted in awkward diagonal walls and an underused nook. The kitchen was outdated and isolated, lacking the space needed for an avid cook, as well as a connection to the rest of the first floor.

As part of the renovation, the stair was reversed allowing for a more gracious entry and a generous coat and storage closet. A portion of the upper landing of the stair is perforated to allow light to pass through from a second floor window. The stair, closet, powder room, and pantry all now align in a service zone, leaving the remainder of the first floor open for the living, dining, and expanded modern kitchen spaces. A moveable screen masks the TV when not in use, and can be used to limit access to the upstairs.

On the second floor, an office / guest room, full bath, and library / sitting room occupy the front, while the primary bedroom with bathroom and walk-in closet comprise the remainder of the floor.

Although a few walls remained from the previous layout, every surface, finish, and system in the house was reconsidered and updated, including new windows, basement waterproofing, and insulation.

The outcome is a thoughtful reconfiguration where the couple entertains and relaxes.

“Remodeling our 150-year-old home had unique challenges, including multiple obstacles that became apparent only after the work was well underway. Jacob was able to quickly come up with considered solutions that not only improved the overall design of our project but kept it on track. Jacob understood what we liked and narrowed down the options for us so that the decision making process was fun and pleasurable instead of arduous and overwhelming.”
